According to a latest survey conducted by the United Nations, sixty percent of people in the world are now using mobile phones, at the subscription rate of 4.1 billion per year. The data reveals increase of around 1 billion in number of mobile phone users since 2002.
A United Nation’s agency, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), publishes comparison of technology development in 154 nations as ICT Development Index, which is related to the international development index.
According to ITU report, more than 60% of people in the world own a mobile phone, with significant jump in users in developing countries.
The report also revealed that increase in internet use is twofold, with 23% of world’s population now using internet, the percentage is up from 11 in 2002. However this percentage among poor countries is quite low; only one person in 20 in Africa has access to internet. Digital divide in internet use persists between rich and poorer nations, as stated in the report.
The report also highlighted that ICT cost, relative to national prosperity, was lowest in the US, Singapore, Denmark, Hong Kong, United Arab Emirate, Luxembourg, Sweden, Finland, Taiwan and Norway.
