AMD launches chip bundle for ‘ultra-thin’ laptops

January 19, 2009

The launch of a chip bundle for ‘ultra-thin’ notebooks by AMD is going to provide laptops which will be costlier and more powerful compared to netbooks, but much cheaper than ultraportable laptops.

The AMD platform is a combination of ATI Radeon X1 250 integrated graphics and its new Athlon Neo processor. Computer producers will also be able to include ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3410 discrete graphics. The bundle, code-named ‘Yukon’ previously, was not given new name in the announcement of launch by AMD.

Athlon Neo, in AMD’s range of ultra-thin notebooks, is the highest specified CPU. The company also provides Sempron processors for this type of laptop. But these CPUs are slower, at 1 and 1.5 GHz, with L2 cache size of 256KB compared to Neo’s 512KB. AMD uses 65nm technology for manufacture of all ultra-thin-centric processors.

HP has already produced Pavilion dv2 notebook using AMD bundle. Dv2 has 12.1 inch display and 1.6GHz Neo MV-40 CPU. AMD’s new platform at laptops would fall between ‘ultraportable’ and ‘netbook’ category. Ultraportables are costlier than netbooks due to bigger size of displays. dv2 which has 12.1 inch display is cheaper than typical ultraportable.

New AMD platform provides HD entertainment with 1,080-pixel playback, with HDMI and DVI digital outputs. The platform can also be used for ‘robust casual gaming experience’.
