Barclaycard, Orange enter into partnership on mobile-payment technology

March 13, 2009

Credit card company Barclaycard and mobile phone operator Orange UK have entered into a strategic partnership to develop mobile-wallet handsets and mobile- payment technology.

Two partners will launch new services and products to enable their combined customer base of 28 million to use their mobiles and make payments with adoption of mobile contactless technology.

Payments up to £10 could be made by customers with ‘wave and pay’ style using their mobiles at retailers where contactless payment readers are installed. There are around 10,000 outlets, including café Nero, Yo Sushi, Eat and Books, where these readers are already installed. MasterCard will be used for making payments.

According to Barclaycard’s spokeswoman, both the partners were working on development of NFC-enabled handsets and SIMS. They are negotiating with number of handset suppliers. She informed that Barclaycard was testing NFC payments technology with its staff.

Orange UK added that both the partners were discussing roadmap and timescale for the handset with manufacturers. It believes that rising demand for NFC technology would bring more handsets in the market over next 2 years.

Both will expand their partnership by incorporating other contactless services including transport and ticketing.

Barclaycard’s spokeswoman claimed that both partners were committed to introduce m-payments as quickly as possible.
