Indian Services Companies Doubles Its UK IT Market Share
January 28, 2008
The top five services companies in India - HCL, Infosys, Satyam, TCS and Wipro - are on their way to increase their pie of the UK software and IT services market. Their share is expected to grow from a mere three per cent to seven per cent within the next three years, as predicted by consulting group Pierre Audoin Consultants. It predicted that depending on the firms’ growth path, one of these leading Indian traders would reach the mark of £1bn in annual revenue from the UK.
In the past eighteen months, UK companies including Carphone Warehouse, DSG and Skandia have all decided to outsource contracts worth £100m plus to certain Indian service providers. The report also mentions that in order to be able to continue to secure deals of this scale, the vendors will need to prove that they can carry out staff transfer deals and handle subcontractor and local partner networks. They will also have to contest the gradual depletion of their price advantage as a result of the rise in domestic labor costs in India. As per Pierre Audoin Consultants, low cost is no longer the trump card of the Indian services vendors. In fact now they are claiming their business against their Western suppliers on the basis of good quality and service.

With more and more IT scandal taking place all around, the innocuous text file called the cookie has become a villainous virus that carry Spyware. Cookies do leave a trail of all the websites that you visit. But for that matter the browser history and all the temporary Internet files are more informative than any hidden cookie. According to a research almost 30% of Internet users are likely to delete their cookies on a weekly or monthly basis. Some users don’t even know why they are doing it but just follows hype.
But at last there is a solution to this. They are called Flash Shared Objects. They have been around for some time. Shared Objects are comparable to technology http cookies. They are also known as Flash Cookies. The difference with Flash Cookies lies in the fact that they cannot be deleted like the way conventional cookies are deleted. Not many people have heard about these cookies leave alone knowing how to delete them. This is good news for all online marketers. They can now get a proper picture regarding how many people have visited their site. But marketers need to be careful about complete data protection compliance if they want to reap the benefits.
T-Mobile Keen On Femtocells
January 22, 2008
Mobile operator T-Mobile intends to begin testing of femtocell technology in Germany, Netherlands and the UK. The chief technology officer of T-Mobile UK, believes that the technology has sure has a lot of potential. It resembles a classic modem or router and uses a swift Internet connection, rather than the wireless network. The word “femto,” denotes something one-quadrillionth the size of any given unit. Femtocells are basically small, cellular base stations that utilize DSL to enhance signal coverage at home or for that matter anywhere indoors. The femtocells aim to ramp up the 3G network coverage without getting overburdened with the costs that is connected with doubling or tripling network base stations. T-Mobile’s recent network-sharing agreement with 3G is also aims towards improving the quality and exposure of high-bandwidth networks, and at the same time reducing costs. The technology surely has a lot of potential. That is why a group of tech companies, including mobile-phone maker Motorola and Web search leader Google, are devoting important resources to femtocell development. In fact femtocells are given an equal amount of energy as given to more conventional technologies including Wi-Fi and WiMAX. Apart from being a technology that can enable dual-mode services, femtocells also allow providers to use other types of services—such as IPTV at a very nominal cost.

Microsoft’s Spy Software to gauge workers productivity
January 18, 2008
Microsoft is developing a Big Brother-style software capable of remotely monitoring a worker’s productivity, physical well-being and competence.
According to source the company had filed a patent application for a computer system that links workers to their computers via wireless sensors. These sensors are said to measure the workers metabolism. A manger could monitor an employees by measuring their heart rate, body temperature, movements, facial expressions and blood pressure. But the Union is skeptical of the same as they think that employees could be dismissed on the computers assessment.
This technology is not new and was only limited to pilots, firefighters and Nasa. This is the first time a company has proposed the development of the software of a mainstream workplace. The system boasts of automatically detecting frustration and stress in an employee. The US Patent Office confirmed that the application was published last month, 18 months after being filed. The development is receiving negative response from many ends yet Microsoft is all guns to incorporate the new application.
The UK Software Sector Fails To Perform
January 18, 2008
Ernst & Young conducted a research on all listed companies in the UK and found 56 profit warnings from around 43 companies in the software as well as the computer services sector. The major reason for this is the delayed or discontinued negotiations. Most warnings came from smaller organizations due to their over reliance on very few products or customers. John Hughman, a senior technology analyst at Ernst & Young, warned that the problems could very well spill over into the next year as IT vendors restrain their spending due to the global credit crunch.
At the same time, Hughman believed that these difficulties did not represent the sector as a whole. He issued a statement saying that the year 2007 has normally been a very good year for UK software as well as the IT service stocks. This can be said to represent the wider strength in the global technology sector. Another good thing is that there was also a decline in the number of warnings in the software and computer services segment during the concluding quarter of 2007. The figure fell from fifteen to nine. So even though there is no reason to panic massively, the warnings must not be overlooked.
EMC Released Thin-Provisioning Solution For Storage Systems
January 17, 2008
EMC has recently launched thin provisioning for the Symmetrix DMX-4 series, its conventional storage systems. The company hopes that this will simplify and speed up both the virtual as well as physical provisioning. The company calls the thin-provisioning solution “Virtual Provisioning”. It is supposed to work across all Symmetrix storage, as well as the latest flash storage and storage drives mounted internally and externally.
Thin provisioning is already accessible from a number of companies like Hitachi Data Systems, HP, 3PAR and others. When organizations introduce new applications to the network, the system will assign resources like memory to the new application. However for the sake of safety most managers apportion more than required. In thin provisioning spare resources are utilized which results in systems that are less prone to any kind waste. Companies have realized that by using thin provisioning, they will be able to save at least fifty percent of the disk space.
With the help of thin provisioning, systems managers can allocate space in “just in time” basis. They can use only as much disk space that they need to use. EMC Virtual Provisioning has the ability to support distant as well as local replication operations. EMC did not announce a set price for thin provisioning. It will depend on the storage space used.
