Dell to present ‘Adamo’ laptop in first half of 2009
January 21, 2009
Dell, the second-largest producer of personal computers in the world, introduced a 10-inch netbook and revealed briefly about its ultra-thin black laptop called ‘Adamo’.
Expected to compete with Apple’s Macbook Air, “Adamo’ which means ‘fall in love with’ in Latin, would be shipped in the first half of this year, as per Dell’s announcement made on Friday.
Pricing and specifications of netbook, which was briefly displayed at Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, are not yet made public.
Dell’s vice president of marketing and consumer sales, Michael Tatelman, claimed that Adamo will be a luxury franchise in Dell brand range.
Dell also introduced 10-inch netbook, an addition to its 9 and 12-inch netbooks line-up.
PC market is gradually getting flooded with smaller and more affordable netbooks than traditional laptops. Consumer Electronics Show provided an opportunity for display of host of netbooks to Sony, Lenovo, HP and others.
Replying to a query whether netbook’s popularity would eat into sales of expensive laptops, Tatleman stated that it was too early to claim that netbooks would cannibalise or prove a companion to laptop and attract more people to market.
Many analysts consider Dell vulnerable to economic slowdown due to weakening PC market. Dell is shifting its European manufacturing base to Poland from Ireland and would be making 1,900 out of 3,000 jobs redundant at Limerick plant under £2bn cost-reduction plan. It cut 8,000 jobs in 2008 and struggled to recover market share it lost to HP.
