HP’s Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop for small businesses
December 20, 2008
Small businesses and education institutions would be offered Novell’s Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop by HP in December 2008. The desktop would be initially available in the US and would be introduced in the UK at later date which is not yet planned by HP.
According to HP’s statement, Suse’s Desktop Linux would be a closely integrated suite of applications including web browser, OpenOffice.org, email, multimedia tools, instant-messaging software and collaboration. It will be carried on HP Compaq dc5850.
For education purposes HP is working on development and maintenance of 40 learning applications in association with Novell. HP would also expand its virtualised browsing software.
HP announced that it has developed Mozilla Firefox, the first-of-its-kind, for its Virtual Solutions with Mozilla and Symantec, for HP customers. The solution makes use of Symantec Software Virtualisation Solution layer with Mozilla Firefox for productive use of internet while keeping business PCs stable.
While surfing the web, changes made to PC are stored in virtual layer, separated from operating system, without altering the machine. Customers can reset browser so that PC returns to its last-known state.
Software was originally offered on Compaq dc7900 business desktop, it has now been extended to other models.
