NTT Docomo To Tie Up With Google

January 29, 2008

NTT DoCoMo, the largest mobile phone carrier in Japan, intends to join hands with Google in order to provide web-search and e-mail services on its handsets. The Nikkei reported once the deal gets finalized, the handset users will be able to access their e-mail, Google search, scheduling as well as photo-saving features via the DoCoMo’s i-Mode Internet network. DoCoMo is also toting with the idea of a next-generation handset utilizing Google’s free OS for mobile devices. The business daily, however, refused to quote sources. This will pave the path for both the companies to roll out an extensive variety of revolutionary services.

DoCoMo is attempting to stop the loss of young consumers who have a tendency to deflect to its competitor KDDI Corp. and Softbank Mobile Corp. On the other hand, Google hopes to better break into the Japanese search engine market, where it is behind Yahoo Japan. The new association between Google and NTT DoCoMo is a sign of change in the manner the Japanese mobile giant carries out business. Initially it had arranged all its own telecommunications services, starting from building the infrastructure to putting up its own services. But now times are changing – hopefully for the better.
